Summer's aren't easy, especially for humid regions like Mumbai. Therefore, we've compiled a list of 12 easy hacks, that if put together will leave you and your home feeling absolutely chill!
Psst!: Most of these hacks will leave you with tinier bills too. :D
The most obvious being switching on the A.C. However, what is not obvious is that you should be repairing your A.C. each season as the humidity levels vary. An A.C. repair ensures that your vent is cleaned, coolant is up to mark, the fan is working correctly and the motor too! An A.C. check up and maintenance once in a while works wonders by increasing the shelf life of your machine, it also goes a long way in reducing the large electric bills generated by A.C.
2. Dark Day:
During the peak hours of scorching heat ( 12.00 noon to 4.00 p.m. ) keep your curtains/ blinds shut. It reduces heat up to 30% percent, consequently lowering room temperature, in turn helping you save up on bills. Unless, of course, you’re deliberately trying to lighten up the room or get some sunshine to come in. However, early morning and evening sunshine is better for both, you and your home as opposed to the mid-day light!
3. All Hail CFL:
Ditch those incandescent lights right away. Switch to CFL bulbs. Why? They help in cooling your house by lowering temperatures and the electric bills.
4. Go Green:
If you have a balcony or a mini space in and around your house start planting or gardening. Plants like Aloe-Vera and Boston fern keep your home cool during summers. Go get ‘em!
5. Net Up:
Even during summers, the night temperatures usually drop. Net up your windows so you don’t let the mosquitoes in while allowing the fresh air of the night to come right in. Make sure you shut the windows before it gets very hot in the morning.
6. Cooler & Fan:
Sometimes it’s easier to run a cooler as opposed to running an A.C. Because it's cheaper, handy and portable, and it produces lesser bills. If you’ve got a cooler at home, run the cooler and fan simultaneously to get the A.C. kind of cool.
Just like you’ve got exhaust fans in your bathroom and kitchen, put one of those in your rooms too. Exhaust fans pull out the hot air from the room and bring in the fresh air from outside through its tiny vent and swift motion of the fan!
8. Inside Out:
Keeping your body temperature lower will make you feel less hot. Take on to coolers such as watermelon juice, nariyal paani, iced lemonade and kiwi-cucumber mocktail.
9. Outside In:
Of course, the kind of clothing you choose affects how hot or cool you keep. Opt for light fabrics such as cotton, linen and sheer’s.
Hang a damp bed sheet on your window. Every time the air comes in, it will get cooler.
11. Old School:
Go old school, get a table fan, pronto!
12. A.C. All The Way:
Use the A.C. temperature, timer and fan speed to control the temperature in your room! Set to one that feels comfortable and pleasant and not too cold.
